Delta Air Lines Passenger Boarding Bridge Program

Client Challenge:
Aging gate infrastructure at several major hub gates were in need of replacement and upgrades.  Maintenance costs were steeply rising as gate traffic increased.  Aircraft turn-around times were far less than optimal.
PRIME Solution:

Engage systematic fast-track design/build delivery of jet bridge replacements and relocations.  New passenger loading bridges with features adapting to different types (and sizes) of aircraft were installed at high volume gates.  Airfield utility systems including pre-conditioned air, 400 Hz and fuel delivery systems were upgraded to expedite aircraft turnover at gates and reduce maintenance costs.  Prime’s existing expertise in fast-track design/build for aviation projects enabled carefully synchronized construction schedules to be implemented that minimized interruptions to airfield operations.  Applied cost saving measures, including the recycling of various pieces of equipment, to accommodate tight construction budget.

Prime consultant to owner for design, design-build and general construction services for numerous projects within the passenger boarding bridge program at Newark and Seattle-Tacoma International Airports.  Work involved civil, mechanical, structural, and electrical engineering; permitting; general contractors; and program managers.

The project scopes included:

  • Foundation load analysis and design
  • Existing jetbridge asbestos abatement design and implementation
  • Demolition and removal of the existing fixed bridge and selected utilities
  • Salvage items from existing gate bridge including the airport gate number signs, Delta logo signs, 400 hz ground power gate box and aircraft cable, telephone and wiring
  • Analysis and refurbishment of a ramp drive jetbridge
  • Ramp area modifications including:  column loads, bolt pattern for the existing bridge foundation connection, aircraft stop-bar locations and quantity, eliminating existing plug-type bridge cable connections, re-striping aircraft lead-in lines, connecting to the existing central 400 Hz ground power system, modifying existing bridge power service to feed new bridge, and providing new electrical junction boxes
  • Purchasing and installation of the re-conditioned and new jetbridges including: new jet bridge/terminal flexible flashing, new carpet, relocated existing 400 hz ground power gate box, and utilities
  • Terminal building electrical, mechanical, and fire alarm evaluation and modification
  • Aircraft parking analysis and striping plan
  • Bridge power service modifications
  • Aircraft 400 hz ground power analysis, design, and installation
  • Pre-conditioned air (PCA) service analysis and installation
  • Apron pavement modifications
  • Port Authority permitting
  • Preparation, reproduction, and distribution of supplemental drawings, specifications, and interpretations for clarification to contractor(s) and/or the owner
  • Budgeting, purchasing, and shipment arrangements of new ramp drive jetbridge including necessary appurtenances
  • Bid, award, and manage the necessary subcontractors required to complete the construction of this project
  • General construction services and program management
